It’s nice to know that I have good taste

When I was younger, I had a crush on this guy (okay, I confess!  I still do have a crush on him, but only when he’s clean shaven)!  I just read this article, and it’s nice to know that he can be so complimentary, classy and professional.  I guess that proves that I have good taste after all!  😉

Edit: For whatever reason, I failed to actually publish this post when I typed it!  Oh well . . . enjoy it now!

Star Trek (Warning: Contains Spoilers!)

I finally saw the Star Trek movie last night!!  In my humble opinion . . . it was fantastic!!  It had everything – action, intrigue, humour, and the Enterprise!

First of all, I thought they had an excellent cast.  Chris Pine was the perfect embodiment of a young Kirk – handsome, brave, daring and charming.  He was able to play the role of the iconic Captain James T. Kirk without turning the character into a parody of William Shatner.  Zoe Saldana brought the character of Uhura alive for me – she was sharp, caring, and sassy!  In all honesty though, the standout performance for me was definitely Zachary Quinto as Spock!  This is not the same man who plays the villainous Sylar in Heroes!  Zachary Quinto portrays Spock as both logical and passionate, and manages to pull that off without turning Spock into a caricature.  I think one of my favourite scenes involves Spock showing both sides of nature when he embraces his love in the turbolift.  The other actors hired to play the iconic figures of Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Pavel Chekov, Hikaru Sulu, and Montgomery Scott each bring their own interpretations to the screen.  I really did feel like I was watching the beginnings of what were to become true and long-lasting relationships between all these characters.

One of the most enjoyable parts of this movie was the humour and nod to classic Trek!  The movie has enough classic Trek references to please the most die-hard fans.  We get to see Sulu fencing, Chekov trying his best to speak English, Bones reminding us that “damnit, he’s a doctor!”  The list just goes on and on.  Everyone in the theatre enjoyed the movie, and there was a lot of laughter throughout the movie.  It helps that this movie does not take itself too seriously!

The only minor complaints I had involve the nemesis in the movie, a Romulan.  Eric Bana did a wonderful job of portraying a man hell bent on avenging the death of all his loved ones.  That having been said . . . it seems like they took away everything, and I do mean everything, that made the Romulans the Romulans!  Maybe it was just because I was a little tired, but it wasn’t until the movie said that the enemy was a Romulan that I realized this was the case.  I guess the movie does make an attempt to justify why these aren’t the Romulans we know from any Star Trek series (I’m not going to elaborate further since that would give away way too much of the plot!), but it was still disconcerting for me.  Another little complaint I have is with Sulu.  First of all, as I mentioned before, all the actors did a wonderful job with their characters, and John Cho was no exception.  However, John Cho is Korean, and Sulu is Japanese!  I do kind of wish they’d found a Japanese actor to play the role.  I am sure there are people out there who would never know the difference, but as someone who can tell the difference between a Korean and Japanese man, it was a little disappointing.

This movie will absolutely breathe new life into the Star Trek franchise!  Not only does it inject some youth and energy into the Star Trek universe, but this storyline actually opens up a universe full of possibilities for future stories!  I am excited to see where producer and director J.J. Abrams takes us from here.  If you haven’t already, I strongly recommend that you go see this movie!  If you aren’t a Star Trek fan, this movie will still give you plenty of action, and if you are a Star Trek fan, this movie will satisfy you immensely!
