I just finished watching the movie The Duchess with Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes. I was very impressed by the performances of these two actors! In addition to some great performances, the movie featured beautiful costumes and lovely British scenery. I remember wanting to see this movie in the theatres at the time, but never quite having the time to do so. I am so glad that I got the chance to see it tonight!
The movie is very much a commentary on the social and political atmosphere of 18th century England. All the characters must live within the confines of the norms of the time and deny what their hearts really want. Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire was quite a politically active woman for her time, and very much a dreamer. She was one of 3 people in her marriage, and she had to find ways to live with that knowledge. She made her decisions based on how much she loved her children, and I have to admire that about her. I am sure the movie took great liberties in presenting her story, but overall I thought it was quite engaging and informative. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys period dramas or biographies!
